They are all mid range gaming laptops the highlight of which is the powerful Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and the NVIDIA GTX 1050 graphics card.
With a very fair price tag, MSI GL72M 7RDX-800 is has one of the best performance/dollar value.
This is a laptop that has subtle looks for a gaming laptop. It is sleek and slender. It is not as mobile and portable as the 15.6″ counterparts, nevertheless, it sill has a fairly thin profile for its size.
The thing about 17.3″ laptops is that they are mostly used as stationary machines. Therefore, they may even warrant you to spend on a decent gaming desk.
The main difference between this and the MSI GL72M 7RDX-699 is that later offers 16 GB of RAM and an additional 128 GB of SSD. This one, the MSI GL72M 7RDX-800, only manages to give 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of SSD.
However, it is also much cheaper. Therefore, casual gamers this laptop is quite ideal. It could show limitation when dealing with professional levels of work, but an extra 8 GB RAM upgrade should solve that in the future.
In Depth: MSI GL72M 7RDX-800 Review
Design and Display
At the bottom end of MSI gaming laptops we still have a model that brings just enough touch to set itself apart from your generic laptop. The outside is all black and slightly with only the MSI logo to add a little bit of silver and red flair.
So the tone is professional with a bit of style that will appeal to gamers looking for a more understated look. Weighing in at about six pounds this slim machine has a nice sharp yet simplistic appeal. The keyboard adds a bit of flavor as it is LED backlit in the color of red putting off a cool soft glow.
The keyboard feels good and the keys are nicely spaced so a definite plus. The screen gives you 1920 by 1080 resolution for full HD and is non reflective so you can game in the sun, if you ever want to leave your lair.
The 17.3 inch screen is a nice touch for a baseline gaming computer. At this level most gaming laptop producers settle for 15 inch screens. MSI’s cooler boost 4 also deserves some mention as it keeps this laptop running cool even when you put it to heavy work.
Let us uncover whats inside the hood of MSI GL72M 7RDX-800. Generally, the hardware of this laptop is suitable for casual gamers.
It is also suitable for all sorts of professional levels of work but you might have to upgrade the RAM to at least 16 GB in that c ase.
If you are familiar with gaming laptops then computers processor should not come as much of a surprise. There is a certain processor that many gaming laptops run with and it makes another appearance here.
The processor in question is the Intel 7th generation i7-7700HQ which is a common piece for good reason. This processor moves at 2.8 ghz on a quad core with turbo boast at 3.8 ghz for some remarkable speed and power making it one of the fastest processors for laptops.
This is strong enough to ensure that all processes run quickly and smoothly, not just the gaming. While it won’t pull the entire cart for excellent gaming on any settings, as that is the responsibility of the graphics card, it does give you a solid base to the point that this won’t ever be the aspect of the computer that pulls the rest back.
This is normal for gaming laptops but as the overall prices drop the value really shines through.
While the processor is somewhat overwhelming the part that will stand out for any gaming computer is always the graphics card. Here we have Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 with 2 gigabytes of built in GDDR5 RAM.
This Nvidia card is very capable allowing you to play pretty much every game on the market while tinkering with settings will be necessary at times. It does not have the massive amounts of RAM some cards carry, but this is a strong middle of the road card.
The biggest issue here as we will explore soon is this laptops standard RAM is not the largest you will find so you will start to experience slow down as you find the perfect setting for each game to run tolerably.
However, since the primary component for running games is the card itself, you should have no issue with handling all of the games at high graphics while maintaining a nice frame rate at FHD resolution.
RAM and Storage
This part hurts a bit, though it does offer considerable upside if you are willing to put in a little extra work. The crux of the issue is this laptop only comes with 8 gigabytes of DDR4 RAM.
The RAM itself is great and 8 gigabytes is just enough to run the majority of programs. On the flip side though with the RAM on the card you will experience considerable slowdown when you step into the domain of high end gaming.
The considerable difference will be experiences by professionals running hardcore software or when hooking up multiple monitors. In that case, it is very important to upgrade the RAM.
This opens up the options for installing your own RAM which would be a pretty cost effective solution that by itself buffs up the value of this model if your willing to put in the work.
As far as the hard drive situation goes MSI has done a great job of giving you everything you need with the necessary combo in MSI GL72M 7RDX-800. Here we have a 128 gigabyte SSD and 1 terabyte HDD in conjunction to give you both the speed and the storage you need so you are not looking to make another upgrade.
The only drawback with the HDD is that it operates at 5400 RPM instead of 7200 RPM that you would expect from a gaming laptop.
Overall if you are willing to make a move on the RAM this is a pretty good package, though the less computer savvy might find this laptop a bit more casual than they expected.
Ports and Peripherals
MSI generally rolls out the same setup for the majority of their laptops in a certain range and that continues here in MSI GL72M 7RDX-800.
Though they use the same setup every time because it is a pretty good setup. Here we have two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 3.1 type C port, and also a USB 2.0 port to suit your taste for speed with your peripherals.
Beyond that all of the usual suspects are here with HDMI, RJ45 lan, mini display, mini sd card reader, and your headphone jack. The RGB backlit keyboard uses what the call edge glow technology to give you a deeper glow than you find in most RGB backlit keyboards if that interests you.
Nahimic audio allows for 7.1 surround sound or at least as close as you will find in a mid range gaming laptop. Dual fan cooling also helps keep the machine cool when the card gets hot, though it is kind of loud.
MSI GL72M 7RDX-800 Review Conclusion
For all of the negatives you can find here at the end of the day a price sitting around $999 makes the biggest statement.
You get a really nice template for a gaming computer even if it is lacking in a few positions. However since RAM is relatively easy to upgrade it actually ends up helping the computers value.
It simply cost less to upgrade RAM than to move up in pricing to a higher level laptop which allows this laptop to provide considerable value for a mid range gaming laptop. So it makes for a pretty good by with the extras.
On the other hand if you don’t want to upgrade the RAM it makes for a pretty pedestrian gaming laptop at a good price.
