MSI GL72M 7RDX-699 is a mid end gaming laptop that boasts a large screen. We have seen the 15.6″ variants from this series like the MSI GL62M 7RDX-1096 and MSI GL62M 7RDX-1408, this particular gaming laptop is for those who prefer more screen real estate.
Although this laptop follows a fairly thin and sleek design profile, it is not really meant for high portability like any 17.3″ laptops.
This is a laptop that can be considered a desktop replacement as it would often be used on a desk without much moving around. Therefore, you may even have to spend on a gaming desk with several other accessories.
Other than, MSI GL72M 7RDX-699 offers a fairly well rounded hardware configuration at a very decent price tag.
Who Would Buy This Laptop?
Well since MSI GL72M 7RDX-699 is a gaming laptop, the first and foremost important customers would be the gamers. However, the potential use for this laptop goes far beyond gaming.
This laptop is equally suitable as a great workstation laptop for more hardcore work such as simulation, graphic designing etc. The large screen makes it comfortable to multitask and to carry out professional work.
Furthermore, the hardware configuration of this laptop is highly suited for very strenuous tasks. Although the graphics card is still mid range, the other core components like the RAM and processor are worthy of a high end laptop.
In Depth: MSI GL72M 7RDX-699 Review
Now that we are done with the intro, let us look at what is under the hood.
Design and Display
With a pedigree for delivering well designed gaming laptops this model by MSI is no different. Part of MSI’s entry line of gaming computers, you don’t have too much flash, however what we do have is a sleek and thin model with just enough gleam to say its not just a run of the mill laptop.
The outside is black and slightly reflective with only the MSI logo to add a bit of color, simple and understated. When you open it up you are greeted with a non reflective screen which is nice for gamers who like to play at all hours of the day.
The keyboard features red back lighting with well spaced keys so typing is comfortable and responsive. Here we have a 17.3 inch screen for excellent picture clarity utilizing this laptops 1920 by 1080 resolution.
The extra couple inches over the standard screen size is a nice bump on any laptop. Since the fact that you opted for 17.3″ mobility shouldn’t be your utmost priority so shouldn’t be too concerned about the slightly thicker frame.
Built in Cooler Boost 4 technology allows this laptop to stay cool even if it might get a bit loud at times when you stress it out. Normal operation should be quiet, overall this model fits right in with most mid tier laptops by design standards.
Now that we have covered the aesthetic part of this laptop, let us get to the main course.
Without a great processor tuned for performance you don’t have a gaming laptop and a company like MSI is well aware of this so they did not pull any punches.
Here we have a Intel 7th generation i7-7700HQ processor with considerable power. This processor sits on the front end of Intel’s newest processor line, and should be able to handle anything that you throw at it.
With 2.8 ghz working on a quad core and turbo-boost at 3.8 ghz this is a processor made for carrying a heavy load. This means that the majority of operations will run smooth and quick.
While other aspects of this machine might warrant upgrades in the future this is the heart that will remain strong for a long time. A strong foundation that deserves a look all on its own as one of the higher tier pieces of this machine.
After gushing over the processor this section brings us back down to earth. Thankfully the ride down is akin to a handful of balloons or even a parachute, instead of a flaming meteor. Meaning the video card is not horrible, but it also won’t redefine your gaming experience – depending on where you are coming from.
Here we have a Nvidia GTX GeForce 1050 with 2 gigabytes of built in GDDR5 RAM. This is a card that is right around the lower middle of name brand video cards giving you the power to play games up to the mid range at high settings.
Here it should be mentioned that NVIDIA 1000 series is unlike any other. Therefore, even this graphics card is far more powerful than the previous NVIDIA GT 950M and even the GTX 960M from the previous 900 series.
With only 2 gigs of RAM though while the visuals will look good, slow down might start creeping in sooner than you expect as you move into higher quality games or with higher resolution.
This wouldn’t be much of an issue in a desktop but upgrading a laptops graphics card is near impossible and this one will set a pretty hard line on your capabilities.
Still you should at least be able to experience the full spectrum of gaming even if you might have to tinker with the settings to find a happy balance.
RAM and Storage
A bit more RAM on the video card would be nice, but MSI does a good job making up for it with 16 gigabytes of stand alone DDR4 RAM. While it isn’t quite as efficient as GDDR5 it will add a nice chunk of extra speed to all of your efforts.
There is very little on the market that will not run well with 16 gigs of RAM which sets you up well for the future. Speed is very important to making a high end computer feel like a high end computer and this one has it in spades.
A good high amount of RAM is crucial for multitasking and professional software.
Following up the RAM we have a 256 GB SSD hard drive that brings along its 6 times faster speed in conjunction with a 1 terabyte HDD so you still have sufficient space to store a ton of files. This is the type of combo you would hope to see in a gaming laptop so this section gets a great grade of approval.
Note that the HDD is not your ordinary 5400 RPM one. The HDD in MSI GL72M 7RDX-699 operates at 7200 RPM resulting in much faster loading speeds.
Ports and Peripherals
Utilility is important in a gaming laptop because outside of the graphics card the biggest thing that will hold you back is lack of space to experiment to find your favorite configuration.
Thankfully MSI has the experience to deliver everything you would hope to find for a pretty standard set of gaming laptop perks. First off we have two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port and also a USB 3.1 type C port for a nice amount of selection between speeds for your peripherals.
As far as the basics are concerned we have a HDMI port, mini display port, RJ45 lan, mini sd card reader and a separate headphone microphone jack. Most of this is conveniently placed on the left side to leave space for the common right hand mouse.
The beauty of the configuration is that you can even hook up multiple gaming monitors should you require thanks to the HDMI and mDP ports.
The Steelseries keyboard with red backlighting adds a bit of flavor while still being well spaced and responsive.
Finally Nahimic audio gives you a nice boost above standard laptop audio systems.
MSI GL72M 7RDX-699 Review Conclusion
With a price hovering right around $1199 you definitely need to know what you want when you purchase this laptop.
With its powerful processor and great choices for storage and speed the skeleton of this model is quite strong. The graphics card is not the most powerful in the market; however, it is just right for playing all of the latest games at high graphics. You can look at the benchmark for this GTX 1050 (Notebook Version).
This card has the ability to run everything and the RAM really helps but it will be a crucial factor for consumers who are looking for a top of the line gaming laptop.
It hurts quite a bit to pay so much for something and not be happy with the boundaries on the hardware. That being said there is enough here to still put this gaming laptop among the top competitors in the middle tier.
